The condition of music is that which is caused by the ability to simply step forward and intuitively play while losing yourself to a gazed audience. The primary cause of this condition is/are deeply talented artists who have the ability to produce music that is severely transportive. Brass Knuckles, (Danny D' Brito, Tony Livadas and Anthony Pisano) merge in the form of a supernatural sixth sense to deliver the condition of music; composed by solid technique, structure, and the element of surprise. The members of Brass Knuckles ignite their audience by causing a deep explosion of rhythmic components; including the all-forgotten orchestrated element of performance. Whether you choose to focus on a visual or audible experience, Brass Knuckles offers an escape/release that merges the deep pleasure found in both mediums to deliver an intensely unique sound in every track.
Exclusive Therapy Life interview with Danny D' Brito from Brass Knuckles:
Therapy Life: What was the first song you ever remixed? How do you feel about that piece now that you have fully developed a style?
Danny D'Brito: Before doing remixes, we were producing tracks for the music industry. Mainly Pop, Hip Hop and R&B. We always had a passion for Electronic music. So, when we decided to come out from behind the scenes, we wanted to do so by remixing tracks that we felt could use an alteration to better fit the Miami club music format. Our first remix as a group was Ne Yo’s - Beautiful Monster. That remix still had a lot of the pop influence from our industry style of production. Looking back now, we have definitely dove deeper into the electro/progressive house route with our productions. I’m still a fan of our earlier stuff, but I definitely feel we have molded our music to a distinctive sound now.
Therapy Life: If you could describe the music you produce in one word to our readers?
Danny D'Brito: Multi-sensory...Does that count!?
Therapy Life: Definitely! Do you/brass knuckles usually begin with a set idea of what you want in a remix? Or is it more of an organic "it just happens" process?
Danny D'Brito: It’s different every time really. Most of the time it's calculated. For example, you want to remix a track that is building a buzz amongst DJ’s, radio programmers and the people in general. For instance, we remixed Cee Lo’s “F**k You” when it was just starting to build a buzz. The song in its original state wasn’t formatted properly for clubs. So, we remixed it and got it out. We were aware that DJ’s were looking for a solid remix and that the song would be heavily searched in general. So, we always try to remix tracks that will be sought out by people on search engines and record pools. But, of course there are times when a creative spark ignites and remixing an old school track not heavily sought out after or creating an original becomes our main focus.
Therapy Life: Yes! Like the Roxanne Bootleg i'm guessing, which happens to be a personal favorite.
Danny D'Brito: I love that bootleg! I realized Roxanne was in the same key as our song closure and managed to find the acapella.
Therapy Life: What inspires your remixes? By inspire, i mean things that you come across on a daily basis. It could be anything from a chocolate bar to a certain color, weather, atmosphere.
Danny D'Brito: It’s funny you mention color. I see music in color. To me, every song has it’s color palette. We’ve discussed this amongst the group and I think we all have that. Sound in general is what inspires us. We have a lot of cool “toys” to play with in the studio. So many sounds to choose from. Each sound triggers a feeling or thought, kind of like when you smell something you haven’t smelled in years and it brings you back to a specific place and time.
Therapy Life: You've been experiencing incredible feedback on your most recent productions. Having tracks like "Closure" with David Solano and "Save The World" remix from Sweedish House Mafia played throughout the world, and landing a European tour. How does it feel?
Danny D'Brito: We spend a tremendous amount of time in the studio. At times we get a sense of cabin fever in here. But we love it. Our studio is our little cocoon. Once a track is ready to be released, thanks to our online outlets and the Internet in general, we are able to share our creations with the world. We are so grateful that people all over embrace our music. It just adds fuel to the fire. As an artist there is nothing more gratifying than having your work appreciated because you ultimately make the music for others to enjoy.
Being able to land a European tour was absolutely unreal. Europe is undeniably the biggest electronic music market. House and electronic music really originated from there. So, we knew we had to bring our A Game. I have to tell you, Europeans are awesome! They know how to party, dance, enjoy life for what it is and let go when they’re out. The tour was a great success. Such positive energy out there. We were so inspired on that trip. So much so that we produced 3 original tracks in our hotel rooms. We’re currently in talks in doing a fall/winter tour out there.
Therapy Life: What is your favorite piece of equipment to work with in the studio?
Danny D'Brito: Our central nervous system has been our keyboard/workstation, the Roland Fantom G6. We create most our sounds on that keyboard. Aside from that, we’ve recently made the switch to Ableton Live, a music production program. There is a piece of hardware we use for production and DJ’ing for Ableton Live called the APC40. That’s my new favorite piece for sure.
Therapy Life: Who has been your favorite artist(s) to collaborate with? Why did this person/group make such an impact?
Danny D'Brito: In all honesty, I’ve been collaborating with Tony Livadas (member of Brass Knuckles) since I was 15. That’s 11 years now. We work extremely well in the studio. We can work on a session in the studio without saying a word and we just know what to do. It’s very fluid. He’s a tremendous talent all around. And more recently, Anthony Pisano (also in BK). He really has a knack for trending music and forecasting the next big thing, being the successful DJ that he is. So, having both those guys in the studio is a tremendous advantage.
Besides my group, Tony and I were producing under a veteran Miami Producer named “Bigg D” (Jay Z, Chris Brown, Jennifer Lopez, Jamie Foxx). Working for him taught us a lot about the industry. He made us work hard as hell and really taught us what it means to be a producer. We had two recent releases with him on the new Jagged Edge Album. One song is titled “Lipstick” and features Rick Ross. The other track is titled “My Girl.”
Therapy Life: What is the ONE genre you don't enjoy listening to?
Danny D'Brito: I do appreciate all forms of music for what they are, but if I had to pick I would say Raggaeton. Sorry if I offended anyone out there.
Therapy Life: How did you get into the Electronic Music world? What advice can you give the young and fresh talent (our readers) that are currently in search of finding a unique sound/style, and trying to get their music heard?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been a fan of electronic music. I’m grateful to have grown up in a very musical environment.. From my father who always blasted Pink Floyd growing up, which I consider the first major pop influence into electronic music, to my older sister who introduced me to Depeche Mode, New Order, The Cure from the 80’s, to Roni Size, The Prodigy, DJ Keoki Amongst others in the 90’s. Those artists played a huge influence in my musical career. From my days playing in bands to later on moving into the producer role, I always had that electronic foundation.
This is what I would tell the young and fresh talent: Have patience with yourself. Allow yourself to grow and develop. Give yourself credit when credit’s due but never get comfortable with where you’re at because there is always room for improvement. If you think that way, you will always be motivated to master your craft and bettering your work.
As, far as getting your music out there- You never want to promote your music like a club promoter promoting a college night. Let the music sell itself. I think this business is 80% politics/business and 20% music. You have to network. Put your music out in the right places. Once you have the right people willingly sharing your music, it's all uphill from there.
Therapy Life: Finally, in good interview etiquette, I must ask a personal question: when you're not behind the DJ booth, or making electronic bliss at the studio, what is your "off-time" hobby?
Danny D'Brito: I’m finding it really hard to answer this question. It’s almost embarrassing. Music has consumed most of our lives here and encompasses almost everything we do. But I guess when we’re not in the studio, I do enjoy going out to various clubs and hearing new music. I enjoy traveling as well; being exposed to different cultures and art. I’m a big fan of visual art as well. Art Basel is dope.
